REPAIR CALLS
"I pressed the power switch and it just went
spzzzip, now nothing happens."
"The first thing I knew there was a big blue
spark behind the couch and then the dog shot out from
behind the curtain trailing smoke. I looked over at
the computer and the lights were out. Turns out the
dog chewed through the power cord, he'll be ok, but
even after replacing the power cord the computer
doesn't work right anymore."
"After the lightning last night the computer
won't turn on now."
"I was checking my email and after I opened
this one email I started getting lots of really crude
email and popups on my screen."
"When I turn on my computer I hear a strange
clicking noise and I get a message saying the computer
can't find a boot drive."
"My computer runs ok when it's cold outside,
but when it gets hot the monitor goes weird and then everything shuts off."
"I can't read the CD (or DVD) that my daughter
(mom, dad, friend, aunt, grandma etc) sent me."
"Last night when I got home I turned on the
computer and there was this smell like something really
hot."
"I was just kind of poking around in Windows,
I don't know, I might have moved or deleted a file, now
I'm getting an error message that Windows needs to shut
down to protect my computer."
"My computer has been running slower and slower.
When I want to do anything I click a button and then
I go have a cup of coffee."
"I hooked up a new printer and the computer
won't see it"
"Can you fix our monitor? It has a hammer stuck
in it" (This one is a whole story all by itself)
"Can you get pop out of a keyboard?"
We won't tell you we've heard or seen it all but
we have seen a lot. Though most repairs
aren't that serious and can be performed with a minimum
of down time and expense there are others that test
our and our customers patience. We generally lump computer
troubles into one
of three very broad categories, hardware, software
or configuration and operator issues.
Hardware Some component such a floppy,
zip, CD or DVD drive will stop reading and writing data.
A keyboard will type every letter except "y"
or "f"" or whatever button happens to
fail. A mouse will no longer control the pointer on
the screen. Monitors won't display the screen correctly
or at all. Power supplies will fail, processors
burn up and hard drives die.
All these, except for the
last, are usually a simple component or peripheral replacement.
The reason we exempt hard drive failures from simple
repairs is that when your hard drive goes away, your
operating system, software tools and often, your data
is lost. We can't stress enough the need for good
backups of your critical data.
Software or configuration problems
We include spyware/malware and virus problems in this
group. Sometimes things can be fixed by simply finding
the right setting to correct. Say your monitor is now
displaying the computer screen as just a small rectangle
in the middle of the monitor display. This could be
a faulty monitor but more likely it's just an incorrect
display setting and everything can be set right
with a few mouse clicks.
That lost internet connection might be a faulty NIC,
but it could just as well be some rogue software that
installed without your permission and is working behind
the scenes on your computer causing no end to your frustrations.
Operator error or lack of understanding
Sometimes people just don't understand how to do something,
They don't understand how a piece of hardware works.
Oftentimes they won't have a good understanding of how
to use the software they have installed. Other times
they don't recognize the limitations of their system
are preventing them from getting something done.Very
often we hear that people don't even know what questions
to ask.
As an example, we had one lady ask us how to copy files to CD. She
was in our office so we just fired up a computer and
in a few moments had her burning CD's like an old pro.
The next day we receive a phone call from her asking
if we could walk her through the steps again, which
we did. The next day the very frustrated lady was in
our office again. We sat down with her and walked her
through the whole process several times. She left and
in very short
order she was on the phone again. We suggested she come
back in but bring her own computer so we could watch
what was happenning. Turns out her CD drive didn't have
write capabilities.
The important things for you to get from all this
is -
First, you are not alone, many others have
experienced the same problems and frustrations as you
are.
Second, help is just a phone call away. Whether
you choose to use our services (which we hope you do)
or someone else, there are many good professionals out
there who can help you resolve your computer problems.
